Performance Differences Between Individual Manufacturing Machines

A company wants to better understand production speed in a specific manufacturing hall and asks BISS/AI.GO to identify possible causes for performance differences between the individual machines in that hall.

Create an overview of the units produced per machine in Hall 4 during the last quarter. Please calculate a daily average per machine.

Machine Average Units per Day
Machine 1 95,000
Machine 2 82,000
Machine 3 77,000
Machine 4 61,000
Why did Machine 3 and Machine 4 produce less during that period?

In the last quarter, Machine 3 and Machine 4 reported more frequent and longer downtimes compared to Machine 1 and Machine 2. The documented reasons for the extended downtimes are as follows:

  • Setup time for Machine 3 averaged 10 minutes longer than the other machines in Hall 4.
  • Machine 4 was out of service multiple times last quarter due to repairs. It also had longer setup times—both issues are attributed to the machine’s age.
  • Machine 3 and Machine 4 are semi-automatic machines, which generally require longer setup times and are more maintenance-prone.

Machine 1 is significantly ahead of Machine 2—what’s the reason for that?

At the beginning of the quarter, Machine 2 was upgraded to a fully automated system. This initially led to longer setup times and a higher error rate. Over the course of the quarter, these values stabilized and now align with the defined reference standards for this type of machine. Additional training sessions for staff are already planned.
